Control: The organisation obtains maintenance support and / or spare parts for[Assignment: organisation-defined information system components] within [Assignment: organisation-defined time period] of failure.
Timely Maintenance Supplemental Guidance:
Organisations specify the information system components that result in increased risk to organisational operations and assets, individuals, other organisations, or the Nation when the functionality provided by those components is not operational. Organisational actions to obtain maintenance support typically include having appropriate contracts in place.
Timely Maintenance Control Enhancements:
MA-6 (1) Timely Maintenance - Preventive Maintenance
The organisation performs preventive maintenance on [Assignment: organisation-defined information system components] at [Assignment: organisation-defined time intervals].
Supplemental Guidance: Preventive maintenance includes proactive care and servicing of organisational information systems components for the purpose of maintaining equipment and facilities in satisfactory operating condition. Such maintenance provides for the systematic inspection, tests, measurements, adjustments, parts replacement, detection, and correction of incipient failures either before they occur or before they develop into major defects. The primary goal of preventive maintenance is to avoid/mitigate the consequences of equipment failures. Preventive maintenance is designed to preserve and restore equipment reliability by replacing worn components before they actually fail. Methods of determining what preventive (or other) failure management policies to apply include, for example, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations, statistical failure records, requirements of codes, legislation, or regulations within a jurisdiction, expert opinion, maintenance that has already been conducted on similar equipment, or measured values and performance indications.
MA-6 (2) Timely Maintenance - Predictive Maintenance
The organisation performs predictive maintenance on [Assignment: organisation-defined information system components] at [Assignment: organisation-defined time intervals].
Supplemental Guidance: Predictive maintenance, or condition-based maintenance, attempts to evaluate the condition of equipment by performing periodic or continuous (online) equipment condition monitoring. The goal of predictive maintenance is to perform maintenance at a scheduled point in time when the maintenance activity is most cost-effective and before the equipment loses performance within a threshold. The predictive component of predictive maintenance stems from the goal of predicting the future trend of the equipment’s condition. This approach uses principles of statistical process control to determine at what point in the future maintenance activities will be appropriate. Most predictive maintenance inspections are performed while equipment is in service, thereby minimising disruption of normal system operations. Predictive maintenance can result in substantial cost savings and higher system reliability. Predictive maintenance tends to include measurement of the item. To evaluate equipment condition, predictive maintenance utilises nondestructive testing technologies such as infrared, acoustic (partial discharge and airborne ultrasonic), corona detection, vibration analysis, sound level measurements, oil analysis, and other specific online tests.
MA-6 (3) Timely Maintenance - Automated support for predictive maintenance
The organisation employs automated mechanisms to transfer predictive maintenance data to a computerised maintenance management system.
Supplemental Guidance: A computerised maintenance management system maintains a computer database of information about the maintenance operations of organisations and automates processing equipment condition data in order to trigger maintenance planning, execution, and reporting.
